The current government guidance on sexual health says teachers should be covering: “
- how the different sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV and AIDs, are transmitted, how risk can be reduced through safer sex (including through condom use) and the importance of and facts about testing.
- about the prevalence of some STIs, the impact they can have on those who contract them and key facts about treatment.”
Students should be taught where to get help if they suspect they have an STI.
This topic should also cover the stigma around sexual health – for example, women worrying about discharge and smells when most things are completely normal and natural.
